Do you ever wonder how recognisable you are? To strangers I mean, as in all the people who have no reason to remember you.
You see there’s a paradox between the two jobs I had, before I left England – a late bar, open til 2am serving drunken fools tequila after tequila, and a coffee shop where they attempt to recover from the state of ruin they put themselves in the night before. Many times now I’ve served the same people, giving them their caffeine hit whilst recognising them as “double vodka orange girl” from my last shift. It’s simply part of the job being able to remember the drink order that goes with each new face at the bar.
However, they have no reason to remember me or my face. So, I wonder… is there something behind my uniform that makes me stand out, even just a little bit? And I don’t mean that in a self-pity, woe-is-me kind of way, but more out of genuine curiosity. I know there’s a few of my customers who come to know me; happy hour guests are a lot more chatty than our late night crowd, and where I lived was just a small town. And the regulars can usually talk your ear off! Haha.
Our uniforms are there to make us all look alike so I suppose what I really want to know is what stands out the most. Is it my glasses that I’m constantly pushing up my nose? My crazy hair that seriously can’t be tamed at this point? My smile? My eyes? The funky earrings I like to wear?
If you were to look at yourself as a stranger, what stands out to you?
