Something that consistently bugs me is life’s little oxymorons. That somehow everything good is opposed by something bad and I understand why this is the way the world works but I don’t have to like it. So, I wrote this poem about some things I’ve had to realise – slow truths wrapped in contradiction.
If life is too hard then why’re you still here?
You’ll never find courage without knowing fear
That man jumped in front of a train did you hear?
I bet he has people still wanting him near.
I bet you do too
Cos two things can be true
They have to be true, for you to realise the truth
That love without pain makes for pretty great days
But how would we feel with all work and no play?
All anger, no peace
Hot without cold
You don’t learn free will simply doing as told.
Rain but no sun
Failure without success
What you’re failing to realise is we really are blessed
And equally cursed
For the things we endure
Life’s certainty comes from being unsure.
The things that break you have brought you so far
You won’t find the depth without sitting in the dark
You can’t take the leap without risking the fall
To live a good life is to accept it all
Maybe your courage can be louder than fear
Cos if life is too hard, then why’re you still here?
